Eyes on the sky as Barossa prepares to take flight

1 min read

Aviation enthusiasts, thrill seekers and families looking for a great day out will all have their eyes firmly fixed on the sky when the 2025 Barossa Airshow takes flight on Sunday April 6.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Barossa Valley at Rowland Flat Airfield, Krondorf, the Airshow is a biennial event with a difference for the region.

This year's Barossa Airshow will run from 8.30am to 4.00pm, with the air displays commencing at 11.00am.

Expect an action-packed program that offers something for everyone, as Chair of the Organising Committee and Promotions, Keith Millington explains.

"It's planned as a family day out that's affordable and we're trying to demonstrate what happens (with) light aircraft, small aircraft, because the field is only 600 metres long on the runway...," Keith said.

While visiting larger aircraft have traditionally taken off from nearby regional airfields to do a fly by, Keith said the final list of demonstrators on the day comes down to availability and, most importantly, the safety of specific aircraft at final checks.

With the Airshow dedicated to all flying machines, the day is scheduled to include other craft, such as helicopters, and Adelaide Soaring Club will also have a display of gliders.

The 2023 Barossa Airshow saw approximately 6,000 people (including crew) head to the airfield for a magnificent Autumn day, with this year's show again set to include parachute landings, some of the roulettes and other gravity defying acts which highlight the pilots' amazing skills and keep viewers enthralled.

Like past events, there will be a host of catering trucks to keep visitors well-fed and plenty of displays on the ground to capture interest in between the air action.

Displays and stalls include, Re-enact SA, with a WWII German anti-aircraft living history display; the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) plane simulator; Barossa Valley Historical Vehicle Club display and vintage machinery on show from Gawler Machinery Restorers.

With a motto of "Blue skies, white fluffy clouds, a gentle breeze from the west," the Barossa Airshow is definitely one for the calendar.
