The Kapunda Shared Walking Trail has commenced construction since the Light Regional Council successfully secured permission from the Department of Transport and Genesee Wyoming.
In 2013, Light Regional Council secured a $40,000 grant from the Office of Cycling and Walking to use on a shared use path.
The proposed path went from Coghill Street to High Street however two different groups owned the area.
Genesee Wyoming owned the corridor from Coghill Street to Clare Road and the Department of Transport owned the corridor from Clare Road to High Street.
It has taken the Light Regional Council nearly two years to get the appropriate licences to have the track constructed.
Mayor Bill O’Brien, Light Regional Council, said, “Once we got the all clear, work started immediately.
“The trail links up to schools, medical centres and parks. It can get kids off the main road so it’s a much safer option.”
The project involves the removal of the old rails and sleepers, and placing down an asphalt trail.
