“It was the best experience of my life”

Erin Solomon, formerly of Tanunda, recently returned from 12 days in Bangkok, Thailand where she was competing in the World Muay Thai Organisation (WMO) Championship Pro-Am Division from March 13 to 21.

The 28 year old, who recently moved to Mount Barker, participated in the Pro-Am 60kg division. 

There were only two competitors in Erin’s division, so they both automatically entered the finals. 

On March 20 they fought three rounds at three minutes each round, with Emily Wahby from Italy winning the fight and gold medal for Italy and Erin awarded a silver medal for Australia.

Although Erin won a silver medal for our Australian team, there were also seven other competitors for Australia - three from Young Lions Muay Thai in Blackwood and four from Nova Martial Arts in Sydney.

Overall the Australian team had great success, winning the 67kg Pro-Am female, 71kg Pro-Am male and 75kg Pro Male championships. 

She explained that the competition was “the best experience of my life”.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to compete in such an exceptional event,” said Erin.

“It exceeded my expectations and the fight itself has made me have more confidence in my abilities.”

The opportunity to compete in Thailand began when her trainer, Ravinder Sidhu (a member of the WMO committee) saw immense talent and potential, asking her to compete overseas.

The WMO Championship is held annually in Thailand, where competitors from 51 countries compete in Professional and Pro-Am divisions. 

The competitions are a part of the International Thai Martial Arts Festival and Games, which also involves all countries attending the opening ceremony held at the ancient city Ayutthaya – a very cultural experience full of Thai fights, foods, markets and activi...
