Painting wellbeing in bright colours

Students and staff at Eudunda Area School are enjoying a colourful new Outdoor Wellbeing Space.

The space is used by the students at lunchtime, with kitchen facilities to heat up their food, as well as by pastoral care workers for breakfast club twice a week.

However, Principal Anna Roebuck said that the space used to be far less vibrant than what is there now.

"We had a year 12 breakfast there once and the weather was awful and that's where we congregated, and it was recognition that it was not a very appealing place to have the breakfast," Anna said.

"That's where the inspiration came from to redesign it and make it…I guess, an aesthetically nice-looking space for students to want to be around."

Anna started doing some research into local artists, and came across Adelaide artist Leah Grant, who despite having recently moved to Melbourne, was able to fit the project in late last year.

Designs were decided upon through a voting process with students and staff, and soon Leah got to work creating her masterpiece.

Grounds staff, Jamie Van Den Ham and Damien Cameron, prepared the area for the creativity to take place.

Two senior EAS students were also involved in the process of producing the mural, learning spray painting techniques from Leah.

After about seven days of work, the mural was complete.

Additionally, another two students, Mitchell Roebuck and Jai Schutz, also constructed garden beds for the space as part of a minor assessment in their design and tech class.

Finished off recently with new furniture, Anna said that both students and staff have had nothing but positive things to say about the new space.

"So now we've created a space which is a happy space, and the kids, when it got done, they said to me 'I actually feel happy sitting out in this space'," Anna said.
