This year marks the 175th anniversary of the Tanunda Liedertafel, and to mark the occasion, the group has planned a concert to be presented on two occasions during the Barossa Vintage Festival celebrations.
This concert will feature some light-hearted songs which celebrate the German heritage of many in the Valley, including tunes in the German language, as well as some songs which highlight the religious conviction which was a mark of the first German settlers to arrive in this region of South Australia.
Book a ticket to the concert on either occasion and enjoy a rich heritage of singing and a rendition on the pipe organ by Barossa's own renowned organist, Andrew Georg.
Around the time the Liedertafel was formed, a newspaper reported in its January 10, 1851 edition: "We see from our German contemporary, that a new Liedertafel, (song society for male voices) has been formed in Tanunda."
This is the best research so far that has revealed the formation of this august body of singers and makes it one of the longest serving cultural organisations in the Barossa and male voice choir in Australia.
