A special meeting hosted by the Freeling/Barossa Valley Quarry Opposition Group attracted an attendance of 25 people at Greenock Institute last Tuesday night.
Mr Wally Cook, Freeling and Mr John Verner, Nain provided a joint presentation opposing the proposed new Kara Resources Pty. Ltd. quarry about 3.3 kilometres north-west of Greenock.
They said on the night, “We represent dozens of people from prime agricultural land and we have to stop the development that’s not necessary.”
It is understood the development company bought the land in 1990 and also wish to purchase additional land which could then make the proposal as large as the existing Penrice Mine.
The speakers highlighted issues with potential B-Double trucks using unsealed roads and dust problems.
They cited further issues with transport, traffic, dust and noise, water and harm to existing business and the visual aspect of a large quarry in the years ahead.
It was suggested that if the quarry were to go ahead a major upgrade of nearby roads would be required. However, they questioned who would pay for such road upgrades, whether it be the developers themselves or town ratepayers?
