Fuelling his way to the top

A second generation Eudunda trucky has been named South Australia’s top Volvo fuel tanker driver.

David Kleinig, who has been driving for Perrys Fuel Distributors for nearly 10 years, is the state’s most fuel efficient Volvo fuel tanker driver according to a monitored GPS tracking and data system installed in his truck.

The trucky for each state was identified by Volvo analysing the Dynafleet scores for each driver over a period of time, whilst undertaking their everyday driving jobs.

“They called me the State of Origin winner in the letter they sent to tell me I had won,” David told The Leader.

“I didn’t even know about it!”

The father of three wasn’t aware of how long he had been “watched” by judges, but he thinks not knowing worked in his favour.

“It could have been done over a couple of months or six… Sometime with these things, the harder you try the more you stuff up!”

David will join five other state finalists in the Volvo Driver’s Fuel Challenge and compete alongside another 14 dealer nominated drivers in a two day semi-final and final to be held in Brisbane this month.

According to the national Volvo event’s organisers, this year’s challenge will highlight “driver’s passion, energy, enthusiasm and commitment to safety” and will send competitors on “a fuel efficiency shoot out that will separate the truck driver from the steering wheel attendants”.

“I’ve heard it’s an 80 kilometre circuit up there at Mount Cotton…We get a jacket and they are putting us up at the Gold Coast, the Sheraton – it’s pretty fancy!”

David’s fiancé, Desi Taylor will join him on his trip, offering support from the sidelines as he tackles the competition.

He said he is both excited and “very nervous” about what lies ahead, especially since he won’t be driving the Perrys Volvo he’s used to.
