Award winning wine for William

Amateur wine maker, Mr William Smidmore, Keyneton was very pleased with his efforts at the Tanunda Show, after achieving a hat-trick of awards for his wine.

Mr Smidmore managed to win awards for best wine in both the red and white wine categories and also won the trophy for best wine at the show, something which had not been done before at the Tanunda Show.

“I rang the convener and he said you did exceptionally well and when I got there I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

This isn’t Mr Smidmore’s first time winning however, after taking out the awards for best white and red at last year’s Tanunda show.

Even though he did exceptionally well, Mr Smidmore did not think this year was going to go so well.

“I thought that maybe I would get a second this year,” he said.

“The Shiraz class is highly competitive as Shiraz is the top of the range.

“They will put wines in from other regions not just the Barossa so you will get people out there that have amazing vineyards competing.”

When asked about his past and recent success, Mr Smidmore explains that he loves the competitive side of it all.

“I have been lucky and won some awards but it’s all a bit of rivalry among friends,” he said.

“I look at what others have done and learn from them, it all comes down to wanting to learn.

“What I have learnt is good wine starts in the vineyard, there is nothing more important.”

Mr Smidmore puts some of his success down to his exceptional housekeeping and years of experience.

“I used to be a professional fisherman/monger so I always still get up early and make sure that everything is clean and tidy,” he said.
