Golden wedding for the Mayor and Marilyn

Golden wedding for the Mayor and Marilyn

They describe their early romance as “a slow process”, yet fast forward fifty years and the Light Regional Council Mayor Bill O’Brien and his wife, Marilyn are celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary.

The Kapunda couple commemorated the occasion on the day after Valentine’s Day during lunch at The Terrace restaurant in Tanunda last week.

Bill recalls when he first met Marilyn. His house mate invited “three girls” to a party at the house where they were boarding at Kensington Gardens.

“We told the girls we lived in this big mansion! Then of course we showed them where we really lived – in the cellar!” he laughed.

“Marilyn was very quiet – she said about three words!”

Marilyn said, “I just remember looking at magazines that first time I met him – there’s no romantic story there unfortunately!”

Bill was 20 years old when he married his 17 year old “child bride” at the Registry Office in Pirie Street.

“The interesting thing was that my best man stood in front of the wrong building with our wedding present, it was a toaster…. He missed the wedding!” said Bill.
