World champion

Scott Thulborn, Nuriootpa, has bowled his way to the World Singles Champion of Champions in lawn bowls after great success at the international competition.

The world tournament went from November 14 to 20 and was held in Helensvale, Queensland at the Helensvale Bowling Club.

Scott represented Australia in the men’s lawn bowls and took home a trophy for his bowling club, Adelaide Bowling Club, and a gold medal.

Scott won the grand final in close straight sets against the representative from Wales. He said he was excited to have taken out the top spot after getting bronze in the last World of Singles Champion of Champions event.

“It was surreal. I was pretty emotional. It was sort of a feeling that words don’t describe that well. It was very enjoyable,” said Scott.

“I have been lucky to play a fair bit of high level competition bowls, so I was pretty relaxed. But you do get some nerves.

“This is the highest level you can go with lawn bowls. Every game is against the best players of the world, best players of that country. It’s just a whole new standard compared to your normal club bowls.”

Scott dedicated this win to his late father, David Thulborn, who passed away nine months ago.

He used to play a lot of bowls with his father. Together, they won the South Australian Pairs Champion of Champions the same year Scott won his singles lawn bowls.

Scott said they travelled to the national leg of the competition but didn’t make it further in the tournament. He was happy to have been able to play competitively alongside his father.

Scott was a former member of the Nuriootpa Bowling Club for four years before moving onto the Adelaide Bowling Club, where he has been for nearly six years.

To get to the international stage of lawn bowls, Scott had to work his way through the club competitions to the state competitons onto the national competitions before being selected as the only Australian male representative for lawn bowls.
