Gelato that bends the rules

Gelato that bends the rules

Beans + Cream Gelateria, Tanunda, has been savouring the success of winning six awards in the dairy section at the Royal Adelaide Show this year.

Owner and gelato maker, Mr Josh Moffatt, entered six of his flavours in total and won an award for each of the gelatos entered.

The award winners were: a gold medal for his banana salted caramel gelato, a gold medal in the vanilla category for his vanilla gelato, and four silver medals for his cookies and cream, Christmas pudding, strawberry, and local roast coffee gelato.

Josh is happy with the result, considering that this is the first time he has entered his gelato into a competition.

Beans + Cream Gelateria, previously Nice Ice, Tanunda, was bought by Josh last year, and he has been making the gelato from scratch using his own recipes.

“I feel great, it’s good to have acknowledgement to back up our product. You make it from scratch and a lot of hard work goes into it. It’s good to have a medal to back that up,” said Josh.

“I like the whole process [of making gelato]. It’s an awful lot of fun to create this sort of [gelato]. It’s a lot of hark work, but a lot of fun. My favourite thing about gelato though is how versatile it is. How there are many ways you can express it.

“I am always thinking of new recipes and always trying to mix it up. There is always something new in our cabinet every week… We try to bend the rules when it comes to our gelato.”

Josh said he has over a hundred different ideas that he is ready to test out and it is always a hit and miss experiment to find what flavours work best together and what don’t.

Since Beans + Cream have had such positive feedback over their gelato, it was the reason that spurred Josh to entering them into a competition.

A lot of tourists visit the site, they give out 2,000 – 3,000 taste tests on their gelato per month. They expect that will double over Spring and Summer.

The products are vegan friendly and gluten free, except on gelatos such as cookies and cream, and some are even diary free.
