Emily takes the lead

Emily Leadbeater of Cockatoo Valley had a welcome surprise after winning Best Junior Vaulter of 2015, 18 and under trophy awarded by Equestrian South Australia on February 5.

The award is given to the vaulter who accumulated the most points in the 2015 year from state and national competitions.

Emily was surprised she received the trophy, it was by chance she was at the award night since her horse had won an award for Best Individual Vaulting Horse for 2015.

“I did the state championships, but I couldn’t do nationals because it was in Queensland. It was such a long journey to get up there. I didn’t do as many competitions as I normally would because I was doing year 12,” said Emily.

“That’s why it was quite a shock to win this award, it’s very exciting at the same time. I went pretty well last year, obviously I didn’t win every competition. You have bad days, but my horse did so well, it really helps you. I had great coaching and everything.

“It’s the last year I can win the award as well because it’s 18 and under. This year I am moving up into the seniors.”

Emily finds the idea of being in higher grade a little intimidating but looks forward to the challenge in the higher category.

Emily will be taking it to a whole new level since she has now graduated from Faith Lutheran College. She will be juggling the commitment of attending University for a Psychology degree, taking up work and training for upcoming competitions.

She will be training on the weekends when she can but understands it will be a bit of struggle balancing everything.
