Casella shows confidence in Lehmann site

In a major boost for grape growers and the Barossa in general, Mr John Casella, of Casella Family Brands, says his company’s barrel ageing will now take place at the Peter Lehmann Wines’ Tanunda site rather than at the company’s Griffiths site.

Addressing vignerons at the Peter Lehmann Grower’s Picnic last Friday, Mr Casella said the move showed confidence the company places in Peter Lehmann Wines. Furthermore, he said all Peter Lehmann products that represent the core of the Barossa will always remain.

He has given the commitment to make the Lehmann brand stronger. Going forward, he plans for the business to create a better experience at the cellar door.

Plans are in hand for re-building some of the brands. Domestic sales are tracking pretty well as the company is working with its distributors.

In a further announcement, Mr Casella told growers the company planned to increase its intake of Barossa grapes and in the future the company will need more fruit not less.

The important thing is the commitment to build the Peter Lehmann brand.

“We can’t increase the quality of our wine without the quality of the initial product and for that I thank you, the growers.

“We plan to introduce a new product called Masterson, which will be sold above the Stonewell and we will need premium fruit for that.

“We have had a difficult few years now because of our stronger Australian dollar. A stronger company can make stronger investments.

“I am proud to be part of the Barossa and you, the farmers, the growers are part of that.

“I look forward to this (the grower’s picnic)  as an annual event,” he said.
