Call for grape treading participants

The Barossa Vintage Festival will once again present the Grape Treading Championships, taking place at the Barossa Comes Home event, April 18 at the Tanunda Oval.

This true Barossa tradition will be hotly contested, with heats open to secondary school teams, winery teams and the general public. Heats will be held at 2.30 p.m. (schools), 3.30 p.m. (wineries) and 4.30 p.m. (general public).

Participants have two minutes of furious grape treading in which to produce the most juice from 20kg of prime Barossa Grenache grapes, donated again this year by Mr Ron Liebich, event convener.

A trophy donated by the Australian Cork Company will be awarded to the highest juice extraction achieved by a team, and a barrel end donated by Liebichwein will be awarded to the highest achieving school team.

A very generous prize pool – along with two years’ worth of bragging rights – will be shared amongst the winners.

Participants must register their interest prior to the event.

Application forms are available at the Visitor Information Centre, 66-68 Murray Street, Tanunda, the Barossa Vintage Festival website [barossavintagefestival.com.au/get-involved/grape-treading] or up to half an hour prior to their heat on Saturday, April 18 at Tanunda Oval.
