Police continue to target distracted drivers

Operation ‘Distraction’ has been extended for the month of July.  Drivers are four times more likely to cause a crash if driving whilst using a mobile phone.  At 60 km/h a vehicle is travelling at 15 metres per second.  A vehicle will travel almost 50 metres in the time it takes to glance at a mobile phone for a few seconds.  Acting Senior Sergeant Matthew Patterson says “Good drivers just drive.

Distractions such as using mobile phones whilst driving should be avoided for the safety of all road users.
Taking a phone call, sending a text or updating your status could cost your life.  It’s simply not worth the risk.”

Using a mobile phone whilst driving attracts a $308 fine plus a $60 victim of crime levy and the loss of demerit points.
