Training the key to Co-op’s future

The Co-op’s investment in training staff at industry level has been backed by findings from a retail report initiated by government and industry bodies.

The retail report identified the significant transformation the industry is going through and the need to collaborate in skills and development.

Already the Nuriootpa based retailer has adopted a model to ensure local people are upskilled and trained which in turn benefits the whole community.

Mr Graeme Longmuir, Co-op CEO, said they are proud to have more than 15 per cent of their workforce successfully completing a nationally recognised certificate.

“It is a big investment into the future of the workforce here in the Barossa,” said Mr Longmuir.

Over the last two years, 25 staff have completed a Diploma in Retail with 10 enrolled this year; 35 a certificate IV in retail and 12 certificate III.

Mr Longmuir said many have enjoyed the opportunity to take on the study challenge, which in most cases has resulted in the first time they
have studied since completing school.
