A brigade behind the scenes

Whilst everyone knows their local CFS, there is one team of CFS volunteers people are unlikely to know much about.

The Region 2 Air Operations Brigade, based at Mount Crawford Air Base, played an integral role in containing the region’s bush fires last week.

It was from this base that a group of 20 specially trained volunteers were working furiously to fill up to seven water bombing aircraft deployed from Woodside to provide air support for the fire.

Formed in 2010 at the site of Mount Crawford’s 1.23 kilometre airstrip, the team filled more than half a million litres of water, with added foam, into the fixed winged bombers.
