Crowds flock to Tour Down Under

Thousands flocked to the Barossa for the first stage of the Santos Tour Down Under yesterday, lifting the morale of the community recovering from the devastating fires.

The community pulled together to create this year’s event dubbed “one of the best,” by The Barossa Council Mayor Brian Hurn, despite earlier concerns it would be cancelled.

“It was a magnificent day. The start was tremendous; one of the biggest crowds I have ever seen in Nuri lining up and down the streets,” Mr Hurn said.

“All in all I was delighted the event continued. I think it was a wonderful diversion from the tragedy and trauma of the past week, it was certainly a morale booster.”

The event’s Nuriootpa start and Angaston finish kept visitors in the region for most of the day, with some local businesses run off their feet to keep up with demands.
