Residents concerned over mining proposal

Greenock couple, Janet and Malcolm Nitschke have worked well past retirement age to secure good quality farming land for the future of their 100-year-old business.

The owners of Nitschke Chaff & Freight now fear their hard work has been wasted, with a proposal being lodged to open a dolomite mine on their land.

Kara Resources Pty Ltd is preparing a mining lease to extract dolomite from Nain Road, on an area of 137 acres – more than 100 of which belong to the Nitschkes.

Residents within 2km of the proposed mine have until Friday to provide written comment, including the Nitschkes, who will be strongly opposing the development.

“I can’t tell you how upset we are,” Janet said.
