Barossa Meals on Wheels calls for help

Concerns over an ageing volunteer base has inspired the Barossa Meals on Wheels branch to take a different tact when calling for help.

Meals on Wheels is asking local businesses to donate employees’ time to deliver meals to the region’s elderly or disabled.

With many volunteers in their eighties, Meals on Wheels needs more people to put their hand up to fill the gap when the current volunteers can no longer do it.

Barossa Valley Branch Co-ordinator, Mrs Carole Hick said with their current volunteer numbers, there wasn’t a lot of room for emergencies.

“We’re very conscious it’s getting colder for some of the older volunteers to be able to get out, or even when it’s 40 degrees outside it’s a bit difficult,” Mrs Hick said.

Mrs Hick said while they appreciate their current volunteers – some of which have been there for 40 years – they needed to ensure there would be enough in the future to eliminate any pressure on the volunteers to fill the rosters.
