Barossa welcomes cycling event

German, Andre Greipel has won stage four of the Santos Tour Down Under as a mass of people lined Murray Street Tanunda to cheer the riders coming into town on Friday.

His victory topped off a day of cycling in the Barossa as the region also played host to the Bupa Challenge which resulted in more than 6,500 riders converging on Tanunda.

Barossa Mayor, Brian Hurn said the day was a marvellous celebration.

“It has been a superb day,” said Mr Hurn.

“Seeing world class sports persons in the main race and for the families to see people in the Bupa event.”

Mr Hurn saw a sea of blue on the Angaston Road as he left his home to be part of the event finish in Tanunda and felt it was “absolutely marvellous” for the people to participate in the Bupa event.

“It is just great for the region,” said Mr Hurn.

“Economically, you don’t know but the marketing of the Barossa and the presence of the Barossa you almost can’t quantify it.
