Robert’s honour

Tanunda’s Robert O’Callaghan has been recognised for his work in the wine industry and Barossa community with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in this year’s Australia Day honours.

The honour acknowledges his support and guidance to those in the wine industry and the role he played to protect the region from residential development through the Barossa Region Resident’s Association during the 1980s.

The founder of Rockford Wines said the honour is gratifying and added what makes it most special is people in the community were prepared to take the time to nominate him.

“It is very gratifying that people in the community would take the trouble to do this and other people that came after the application supported it,” said Robert.

“What’s ironic about this, is that when I came to the Barossa in 1970 there were two people with an Irish name.

“I am not Barossa born but I love the place and it has been a wonderful experience being part of it.”
